First, what is 4G LTE? What’s the difference between 4G LTE, 4G, and 3G?

You said this works on a mobile device. How does this work on my yacht?

If you already have a modem or router for cable or WiFi access that provides Internet access throughout your vessel it’s pretty much the same thing. A 4G LTE modem and SIM card get added to your network, and you choose between which type of Internet you want- VSAT, dockside wire, dockside WiFi, or 4G LTE- to connect you and your guests to email, streaming, and anything else on the Internet.  


What about speed? How fast is 4G LTE?

4G LTE is about ten times faster than 3G and about 3 times faster than 4G. Congestion, the carrier, the distance from the tower, and the mobile device itself all affect the speed so there is no firm number, only relative. The other important thing about Marine Data Systems Internet access is that our unlimited plans are just that- unlimited. Other carriers call their plans unlimited, but they start slowing you down when you reach a certain amount of data, which is called “throttling”.
